On today’s roads, good things are moving fast and multi- directionally. A spark anywhere triggers others in expected and unexpected places. Tesla ignited the current electric vehicle (EV) spark in 2008 with its Roadster, which in turn enabled subsequent models. The very idea got people so excited about a mass-produced and competitively priced EV that more than 400,000 customers paid $1,000 each to reserve one

Global electric vehicle manufacturing is booming, and the automobile industry tells us this is just the beginning. While this is a positive development for clean air and our collective efforts to address climate change, without federal support to spur consumer demand for these vehicles, American drivers, workers, and automakers might not see the full benefits of this technology domestically. That’s because the electric car

With the 2020 National Electrical Code in the final stages of development, I thought it would be a good time to look back 100-years to the 1920 National Electrical Code and see what the electrical industry was up to so long ago.The “Report of Electrical Committee” was presented to the NFPA membership on May 5, 1920 by Chairman Dana Pierce of New York. Mr. Pierce would go on to become the second president of Underwriters Laboratories in 1923 upon the

With the advent of connected and autonomous and electric vehicles (CAV and EV), the transportation industry is about to change dramatically from its current iteration. These changes could bring significant benefits to America’s roads, as they have already been shown to improve traffic flow, reduce roadway injuries and fatalities, and reduce emissions. The NEMA Transportation Management

From planes to trains to automobiles, everything about how we move from point A to point B is about to change. We are on the cusp of a revolution in transportation moving us toward a future that is increasingly connected, electrified, shared, and—soon—autonomous.
Several new technologies and technology applications are widespread across the country such as initial ride-hailing and car-sharing activated by smartphone applications; electrified transportation, including vehicles, ferries, bicycles,

It appears popular these days to assert the Trump Administration is “rolling back” regulations and returning the country to a by-gone era. We do not write to weigh in on that assertion writ large, but to rebut specifically the “roll back” characterization as it applies to light bulb regulation by the Department of Energy (DOE) as presented by our colleagues in the energy efficiency community in the April 30, 2019 edition of The Hill. Before the recession, housing starts averaged 1.57 million units per year. Since the end of the financial crisis in 2009, the recovery in residential construction has lagged overall growth. Housing starts have averaged just 1.24 million units since 2017. Housing affordability challenges have contributed to weak residential construction markets.

Lighting systems are everywhere—and they are an important focus area of NEMA. Besides improving lamps using the latest technologies, lighting manufacturers have been hard at work to give us illumination and lighting controls that impact our everyday lives and make our society more healthful and productive.
This issue of electroindustry explores several aspects of lighting—controls, the LED revolution, and human-centric experiences.
Lighting controls are integral to building design and function. Networked
