This NEMA Guideline document is developed to provide guidelines for specifications in cable installation projects. In general, cables represent a major part of electrical installations. Cable trays shall support, route, protect, and provide a pathway for cable systems. Cables in cable tray systems can be a preferred pathways for cables. Cables in cable trays are to be adequately marked, identified, and replaced. Cable trays are therefore the preferred solution for cables when upgrading, reconfiguring, or relocation of systems are required.
It has been identified that every project has its own procedures for cable installation in cable trays leading to large variations in requirements. This NEMA Guideline aims to reduce the variation in requirements to the minimum necessary to reflect a common and global best practice based upon existing practices, standards, and regulations.
The main benefits of standardized cable installation are expected to be reduced engineering hours and more streamlined construction. A risk-based approach has been used when defining the proposed requirements and specifications.
