“While others debate the efficacy of EPA’s new tailpipe emissions rule in accelerating America’s transition to electric vehicles, another conversation worth having focuses on the readiness of our country’s electrical system, grid, supply chains and infrastructure to enable the Administration’s objectives. NEMA supports the electrification of America’s transportation systems, and our members produce the wire and cable, conduit, batteries, transformers, lighting, charging equipment and other technologies required to create a nationwide EV infrastructure.
However, in order to achieve this promise, a broad and supportive policy ecosystem is desperately lacking and, in some key instances, the Administration’s own policies are impeding progress. Moving target trade policy that undercuts long-term investment; a patchwork of complex agency-by-agency Build America Buy America requirements; and over-regulation of distribution transformers that are already at record efficiency and multi-year lead times are just a few of the areas requiring policy alignment.
Electrical manufacturers look forward to working with the Administration on solutions to these challenges so that we can rapidly expand capacity and drive our all-electric future.”
