On March 4, NEMA Member Siemens announced at the White House alongside President Biden, it’s investing $54 million in three new U.S. manufacturing facilities in Texas and California that will manufacture electrical infrastructure and EV charging equipment.
President Biden said during a the conference that he virtually toured two of Siemen’s facilities and that their investment “alone is going to create 300 new, good-paying, cutting-edge manufacturing jobs” to produce “high-tech, high-value equipment.”
This news comes on the heels of NEMA Member Schneider Electric’s recent announcement regarding opening its largest U.S. manufacturing facility in El Paso, Texas. The facility will employ 400 people to manufacture customized low voltage switchboards that efficiently distribute electricity to one or more sources in commercial settings.
Earlier this week U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear toured Schneider Electric’s Lexington, Kentucky smart factory that employs 680 people. The leaders were briefed on the facility's state-of-the-art technology that saves 26 percent of the energy it once used and reduces carbon emissions by 78 percent through digital advanced manufacturing technologies.
National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) President and CEO Debra Phillips issued the following statement:
“During the State of the Union Address, President Biden outlined the importance of investing in the future of American manufacturing and infrastructure, ensuring American manufacturers have a level playing field with other countries, and growing our clean energy economy.”
“NEMA members are at the forefront of driving this revitalization and modernization. Electrical components are integral to a connected, resilient, prosperous, sustainable, and healthy society. The recent announcements from Schneider Electric and Siemens are just two examples of electroindustry investments in American workers, products and technologies that will strengthen critical domestic supply chains, enhance the economy, and modernize U.S. infrastructure.”
“NEMA members and the electroindustry will be involved in fully one-third of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s implementation and will be critical to the promise of electrified transportation systems; a more resilient, efficient grid; advanced manufacturing; and high performing buildings.”
“However, the promise of this unprecedented opportunity will only be realized if our manufacturing, supply chain and regulatory systems are able to meet the coming demand. That’s why NEMA is calling on Congress to move quickly to reach a bipartisan compromise on competitiveness legislation, ensuring that the reconciled bill finally funds the CHIPS Act and also provide immediate relief to Section 301 China and Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs, and fair allocation of semiconductors to all industries. These actions will help ensure the efficient and free flow of goods across the country.”
“Our industry looks forward to working with lawmakers on policies and programs that will fortify our nation’s manufacturing base, strengthen supply chain systems and streamline regulatory programs to support the creation of an electrified, connected, and sustainable future.”
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) represents nearly 325 electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers that make safe, reliable, and efficient products and systems. Our combined industries account for 370,000 American jobs in more than 6,100 facilities covering every state. These industries produce $130 billion in shipments and $38 billion in exports of electrical equipment and medical imaging technologies per year.
