Paper highlights how to respond to fire threats with speed and precision
Bolingbrook, Illinois–With fire season now upon us, communities across the high fire risk areas are doing their best to prepare as experts are predicting another prolonged season. G&W Electric Co. and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), have announced the availability of a white paper titled "Fire Mitigation for Distribution: Achieve Quick Progress with Advanced Technology Solutions."
The jointly-written white paper provides strategies and technologies designed to minimize the threat of electric power-induced fires. The solutions are focused on distribution protection equipment that can be quickly installed into high fire risk areas.
"By installing new equipment and upgrading aging infrastructure, we can help mitigate fire risk," said Nick Nakamura, product manager, G&W Electric. "Our system-hardening strategies are designed to reduce risk in high fire-threat areas."
The white paper provides ways to improve system protection against wildfires with strategies that take advantage of technological advancements, including downed conductor detection, adaptive reclosing, and fast fault clearing. G&W Electric's system-hardening features minimize flashovers caused by environmental factors such as high winds, lightning, and wildlife contact.
"By teaming up with G&W Electric, we have provided a solution fit for wildfire mitigation," said Anthony Rahiminejad, lead product sales manager for SEL.
"We understand the importance of taking the necessary measures to reduce threats to public safety and infrastructure," added Nakamura. "This paper provides utilities a road map on how to navigate this ever-increasing public safety threat."
