Wire and Cable
At the heart of transporting energy from one location to another is a
wire or a cable. From spaceships and million-ton ships to medical
transmitters smaller than a dime, connected buildings and utilities,
each use wires and cable products covered by the NEMA Wire and Cable
Section. This group is comprised of four distinct sub-groups that each
focus on a specific area:
- High Performance Wire & Cable—This group focuses developing requirements for wire
and cable used in power and communication, including voice and data,
aerospace, military, shipboard, transit wire and cable applications.
- Building
Wire and Cable—Nearly every commercial, industrial, and residential
building relies on products made following standards covering building
wire. This group works closely with the Underwriters Laboratories
and other Standards Developing Organizations for armor cable,
flexible metal conduit, metal-clad cable, non-metallic sheath
cable, and other types of building wire used and specified in the
U.S. and National Electrical Code®.
- Power
and Control Cable—This section covers both signal cable and high voltage
utility cable. This group tracks and advocates to ensure industry
needs are known for international trade and tariff issues.
- Flexible
Cords—On nearly every appliance is a power cord. In addition to
covering cords for appliances, the group develops Standards related
to the growing field of power cables used for electric vehicles
and industrial portable power cable.
