NEMA-Backed Carbon Monoxide Bill Gains Ground in Maryland: The Maryland House Environmental Matters Committee on February 2 held its first hearing on HB 2, legislation to require the installation of carbon monoxide (CO) detection and warning equipment in public schools. The Maryland Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee will conduct a hearing on companion legislation (SB 173) on February 8. If enacted, Maryland would become the second state to require CO detection in school buildings. Connecticut enacted a NEMA-championed law (Act 11-248) in 2011. NEMA advocates on state and federal levels for initiatives that advance life safety, including carbon monoxide detection requirements for homes, commercial residential occupancies, and schools.

NEMA Recommends U.S.-European Union Engagement to Prevent Trade Barriers: On February 3, NEMA filed written comments written comments with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to encourage a working group of the U.S. and European Union governments to strive for the reduction and prevention of transatlantic trade barriers, with a special emphasis on industry sectors critical to future economic growth, including Smart Grid, electric vehicle supply equipment, and intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies. NEMA supports U.S. government efforts to eliminate tariff and non-tariff barriers inhibiting foreign market access for NEMA exporters.
