About Homeland Security
DHS is an umbrella agency with primary responsibility for preventing terrorist attacks within the U.S., reducing U.S. vulnerability to terrorism, and minimizing damage and enabling recovery from attacks that do occur. Various arms of DHS are engaged in multiple activities toward achieving those objectives. These activities include, but are not limited to:
- Prescribing capabilities federal, state, and local authorities and private businesses need.
- Adopting technical standards for equipment – with the aims of ensuring interoperability, multiple vendors and error-free operation.
- Certifying anti-terrorism technologies to promote deployment and convey liability protections.
- Funding research and development.
- Procuring equipment directly for DHS use.
- Granting funds to state and local authorities to enable procurement of NEMA equipment.
