The member companies of the NEMA Transformers section and the Edison Electric Institute established the NEMA Premium
® Efficiency Transformers program to provide highly energy efficient products that meet the needs and applications of users and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) based on DOE distribution transformers standard and use of the NEMA Premium
® logo for premium products. NEMA has been a leader in energy efficiency, beginning in 1998 with TP-1, the industry’s first voluntary efficiency standard.
NEMA Premium® labeled transformers will help purchasers optimize distribution system efficiency, reduce electrical power consumption and costs, and improve system reliability.
Based on U.S. Department of Energy data, it is estimated that new transformer efficiency standards will reduce CO2 emissions by 238 million metric tons over equipment lifetimes, and provide net present energy savings of $1.39 billion. The NEMA Premium program will accelerate these benefits by deploying efficient transformers faster than required by law.
