The Program Manager, Grid Sector directs the standards development process for modern grid technologies. The Program Manager leads member companies in developing and executing a technical strategy and work plan to align activities with Sector- and industry-wide priorities and technology trends. The Program Manager is expected to contribute to the development of NEMA-wide strategic documents (i.e., Technology Roadmap, International Strategy, Code Strategy, Standards Publication Plan), manage multiple technical Sections, engage directly with members and partner organizations, and deliver tangible results for member companies. Work encompasses both domestic and international technical activities.

The position reports to the Managing Technical Director, Grid and Mobility Sectors. NEMA delivers value to members using a matrixed, multi-faceted model, supported, and facilitated by the Program Manager, and the position requires close coordination across NEMA Departments. The position is eligible for a partially remote work schedule, but may include up to 30 percent time on travel, including both domestic and international.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop and maintain manufacturing and performance standards and other technical work related to electric grid products and systems and other technologies as assigned
    • Direct creation, review, revision, maintenance, and withdrawal of technical documents, including standards
    • Develop a strategy and work plan that delivers business-relevant technical documents, including standards
    • Surveil/monitor the U.S./international standards environment/industry trends, systematically researching standards gaps to fill
    • Leverage digital tools to develop standards quickly and efficiently; share best practices with other NEMA staff
    • Work with NEMA Public Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Membership Services, and Growth Departments, as well as members, to promote and drive adoption of existing and new technical documents, including standards 
  2. Lead NEMA Technical Committees, Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs), and other technical work as assigned
    • Develop annual/situational technical work plans and achieve assigned goals
    • Understand and exploit via new technical work relationships between and among devices and different types of networks (IT, Communications, etc.) 
    • Plan and manage meetings, prepare minutes, and distribute associated documents according to NEMA best practices

    • Develop and execute annual plans and remain at or under budget 
  3. Build effective and persistent personal lines of communication with NEMA member companies, technical committee participants, and key partners and participants in non-NEMA standards activities

  1. Executive Support

3. Event and Meeting Coordination & Support

  • Plan and support logistics for internal meetings, technical committee meetings, forums, and industry events in collaboration with the Manager, Meetings & Events; this includes coordinating hotel blocks, room reservations, catering, A/V, room setup, and virtual platform support
  • Coordinate meeting invitations, registration, attendance tracking, and distribution of materials
  • Record and distribute meeting agendas, minutes, action items, and post-event reports when needed
  • Assist with on-site logistics for key events such as the NEMA Standards Summit and technical forums
  • Serve as a reliable point of contact for stakeholders engaging with the Technical Affairs department, ensuring professional and seamless experiences

Experience and Qualifications

Position Summary

This role provides support for NEMA’s membership team, particularly for new corporate membership recruitment and retention. The Coordinator role is an ideal early career position as it provides broad exposure to membership services for a dynamic, forward-thinking trade association. This position requires in-office presence at NEMA’s office in Arlington, Virginia two days per week, with the occasional need for additional in-office days for major meetings or other events. The position requires periodic travel (3-6 times per year) to support NEMA events. The position reports to the Director, Membership Sales.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the position are to provide support for NEMA’s membership function, including the following: 

  • Learn the business and operations of NEMA members to best meet member needs, effectively communicate the NEMA value proposition, and identify areas for additional NEMA value opportunities  
  • Manage the member application process
  • Support the onboarding of approximately 20-30 new members per year
  • Research current NEMA members and NEMA member prospects to support member retention and recruitment
  • Regularly update the NEMA member management database and be responsible for its ongoing accuracy 
  • Develop custom membership reports

  • Prospecting: Manage and grow a list of prospective members and develop a strategy for successfully engaging companies to join NEMA through direct engagement. 
  • Sales Meetings: The candidate will be responsible for setting the meeting, attending, and leading the meetings with C-Suite executives.  Prepare for the meeting and the approach for each meeting to include involving the correct NEMA staff to attend the meeting.   • Retention & Value Experience: Articulate, refine and adapt NEMA’s value proposition to potential and existing members. Serve as a leading brand ambassador for NEMA. Assess existing membership base to analyze the member experience and develop retention tactics and strategies, addressing or elevating issues of concern with urgency.

Requirements: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to successfully perform the job as well as the education and experience requirements.

  • Eight plus years of sales experience; experience selling value-added services or memberships is a plus 
  • Understanding of or direct experience working for a trade or membership association is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; concentration in sales or marketing operations is a plus
  • Knowledge of the electrical industry is preferred, as is knowledge of smart manufacturing

The Senior Director, Global Policy will play a key role in responding to a dynamic trade environment and developing and advancing NEMA’s long term global strategy. The Senior Director will provide subject matter expertise in international trade and related global supply chain issues and advocate and advance NEMA’s policy priorities in domestic and international forums. The Senior Director will oversee and work to advance NEMA’s sectoral approach to trade policy, focusing on electroindustry priorities and navigating a dynamic and unpredictable trade environment.

Key Responsibilities

Enhance and execute NEMA’s international strategy and services for NEMA members, partnering collaboratively with internal stakeholders and leveraging external relationships to create a favorable, sustainable international business environment.

The Senior Director will provide thought leadership and member management on internationally focused member services in areas such as U.S. trade policy, international standards setting, compliance with import, export, and international treaty rules and requirements as well as in emerging issues for the electroindustry internationally. The Senior Director will advocate and advance NEMA’s interests in the implementation of key laws and regulations, both foreign and domestic, critical to the electroindustry’s global market competitiveness.

The Senior Director, Global Policy:

  • Monitors, analyzes, and tracks federal legislative developments related to NEMA’s trade policy priorities
  • Prepares timely updates, alerts, and summaries to keep members informed of relevant developments.
  • Leads members in establishing NEMA policies, positions, and advocacy objectives with regard to international affairs.
  • Leads development and implementation of legislative strategies to include involving member company representatives.
  • Analyzes, summarizes, and presents on electroindustry trade flow data in concert with NEMA’s Business Intelligence Unit.
  • Leads implementation of NEMA’s sectoral trade policy approach which is underwritten and supported by objective data analysis of electroindustry trade flows.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with Congressional offices, federal agencies, and coalition partners
  • Engages with Congress and US government agencies overseeing international trade policy issues.
  • Leverages a deep and wide network of contacts to keep informed about current and future global issues affecting the electroindustry.
  • Partners closely with Technical & Industry Affairs team on international standards and works across NEMA to address foreign regulatory issues.
  • Demonstrates thought leadership in the areas of global trade policy, which could include electroindustry trade flows, geopolitical risk, import/export and sanctions compliance (ITAR, EAR, and OFAC), trade remedy actions, foreign trade zones, and trade missions.
  • Works with NEMA’s Government Relations team to advocate for NEMA’s    near-term priorities shaped by Executive Actions, statutory mandates, and trade policy negotiations at the federal level.  
  • Manages NEMA’s trade consultant and works closely with our affiliate in Mexico.

Experience, Attributes & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of previous international trade and policy experience with US government, global company or association, or a combination of experience demonstrating depth and breadth of experience and expertise in international business and trade, industry-government collaboration, and advocacy in the global policy and regulatory arena. Must have the executive presence to represent NEMA in global forums, board rooms, US government agencies, and with executive representatives from member organizations. This position reports to the Managing Director, Government Relations. This position is based in Arlington, VA with provisions for a hybrid work-schedule. The position includes international travel for NEMA meetings, stakeholder development and member engagement.
