Electroindustry Business Confidence Index


The Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) indices gauge the business confidence of the electroindustry in Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America, and are based on the results of a monthly survey of senior managers at NEMA member companies. Those companies represent more than 80 percent of the electroindustry.

NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America declined in May, falling from 66.7 in April to 55.9, but continued to show signs of improvement in the business environment by remaining above the 50-point mark. Confidence in future business conditions also declined in May but remained firmly in positive territory. NEMA’s April Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions indicated continued improvement in the business environment, as the index edged up to 66.7 from the 65.9 recorded in March. By contrast, confidence in future business conditions declined in April but remains firmly in positive territory. NEMA’s March Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions continues to indicate improvement in the business environment despite slipping in March. The index registered 65.9 in March, down from the 73.8 recorded in the first two months of 2013. By contrast, confidence in future business conditions continues to build, as the EBCI for North American conditions six months hence climbed by nearly 10 points in March to 90.9, the highest level for the forward looking index in a decade. NEMA’s February Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions again pointed toward widespread improvement in the business environment facing electrical equipment manufacturers, with the overall index steady in February at 73.8, matching its highest post-recession mark. Meanwhile, while the EBCI for future North American conditions retreated slightly in February, it remained in historically elevated territory at 81. NEMA’s January Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions built on the momentum generated at the end of 2012, climbing for a fifth month in a row to 73.8. The nearly 10 point gain relative to December brought the index to its highest level since the Great Recession. Moreover, the survey’s measure of the degree of change in current North American conditions was in positive territory for a third straight month.
